One thing that catches people out on older houses is the external angle. A 135 degree mitre at a bay window or a projecting return needs to sit flush and seal properly, otherwise you get a drip point right above the window head. We deal with those regularly around here.

Do I need planning permission?

You with a guttering question about planning, here is the honest answer. In almost every case, no. Replacing or repairing gutters, soffits, and fascias on a standard home is considered routine maintenance and does not require planning permission. If the property is a protected structure, you should check with the local authority first, however most straightforward replacement work falls well outside that.
